FAQs

Starting therapy can come with a lot of questions.

Whether you’re new to therapy or returning after some time away, this page covers the practical things you might be wondering.

If there’s something we haven’t answered, don’t hesitate to reach out.

No question is too small.

Most common questions

  • To get started, contact us through our online enquiry form or give us a call.

We’ll then send you a Getting To Know You (GTKY) questionnaire so we can make sure we’re the right fit for your needs. If we’re a good match, we’ll send you our new client registration and intake forms.

Once your forms are completed, our Client Experience Officer (CEO) will help you book your first appointment.

If completing forms feels difficult or overwhelming, we can arrange a 30-minute phone or online call with our CEO, who can guide you through the questions and complete most of the forms with you. Your consent forms can also be sent via email or SMS for convenience.

  • We do prefer that clients obtain a referral from their GP before their first appointment.

This helps us provide more collaborative, informed care and ensures we have relevant background information, including previous diagnoses, physical health history, and current or past medications.

If you would like to claim Medicare rebates, you will need a Mental Health Care Plan and referral from your GP.

  • Your first session is a chance to meet your psychologist and get a sense of how we work. We’ll start by introducing ourselves and sharing some information about the service, including important practical details such as confidentiality and how therapy works.

We’ll then talk about what has brought you to treatment and what you’re hoping to get out of support. There’s no pressure to share everything at once—this is simply an introduction, and you can go at your own pace. Your psychologist will help guide the conversation so it feels safe, structured, and supportive.

  • The first 3–4 sessions are focused on getting to know you more deeply and building a strong therapeutic relationship. During this time, we’ll explore your personal history and the experiences that have led you to seek support with us. We’ll also work together to understand how your mind works and what may be contributing to your current difficulties, as we don’t believe in “band-aid” approaches.

As part of this process, we may send you questionnaires to help us better understand your experiences. These can include screening tools for common concerns, as well as areas such as neurodivergence and trauma, or anything specific you’ve raised. This helps us build a clearer and more complete picture of your needs.

We’ll also discuss potential barriers to treatment that can sometimes come up in therapy, and how we can work together to prevent or address them. By the end of these early sessions, we begin forming a shared understanding of what’s been happening and start developing a tailored treatment plan to guide your ongoing care.

  • Most individual sessions are 50 minutes. Extended sessions (75–90 minutes) are available for certain therapies like EMDR or for couples therapy.

  • Yes. If you have a valid Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, you can access Medicare rebates for up to 10 psychology sessions per calendar year. After your appointment, we’ll process the rebate directly into your bank account.

If you are eligible for an Eating Disorder Plan (EDP), you may be able to access up to 40 rebated sessions per year, provided in blocks of 10 sessions. Medicare also requires a psychiatric review between the second and third referral periods to continue eligibility.

With an EDP, you may also reach the Extended Medicare Safety Net, which can increase your rebate once you pass a certain out-of-pocket threshold—potentially returning up to 80% of additional out-of-pocket costs.

If you have used all available sessions under your current treatment plan, you may be eligible for a Chronic Condition Management Plan (CCMP) through your GP, which can provide up to 5 additional rebated sessions per year. Please note that CCMP rebates are typically lower than those available under Mental Health Care Plans or Eating Disorder Plans.

  • Yes, all of our services are available via secure telehealth sessions. This means you can access care from the comfort and safety of your own space, anywhere in Australia.

While you can join sessions using a phone, we generally recommend using a tablet or computer where possible. A larger screen can make it easier to stay engaged and fully participate in therapy, and some approaches—such as EMDR for trauma treatment—are better experienced on a larger display. It can also be more comfortable and less distracting than holding a phone throughout your session.

  • We use a range of evidence-based, identity-affirming approaches tailored to each individual. This may include EMDR, CBT, schema therapy, trauma-informed care, and neurodivergent-affirming modalities. More information about specific approaches is available on our Services page.

Each practitioner also brings their own training, therapeutic modalities, and areas of special interest, so the approach used in your therapy may vary depending on your psychologist and your needs.

Across the clinic, all of our work is grounded in an identity-affirming, trauma-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming framework, ensuring care is respectful, collaborative, and tailored to how you experience and move through the world.

We are also committed to ongoing professional development and regularly engage in training to expand and refine our areas of expertise, so we can continue to provide up-to-date, evidence-based care.

  • Yes. We include neurodivergence screening as standard for all new clients, which covers ADHD and Autism alongside other commonly co-occurring experiences. This helps us better understand your needs from the outset.

We do offer ADHD assessment; however, we usually integrate this into ongoing therapy rather than completing it as a separate standalone process. Information is gathered over time through sessions and questionnaires, which helps reduce cost and duplication.

If screening suggests ADHD and you are seeking stimulant medication, we will generally recommend a psychiatric assessment for formal diagnosis. In many cases, this is the most efficient pathway. Where ADHD is assessed within our service, we typically provide a brief update to your GP (if you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan or Eating Disorder Plan), rather than a full report—unless one is specifically required. You are always copied into correspondence.

For Autism, assessment is available but approached in the context of your broader goals and presentation, as ADHD and Autism often overlap. If your presentation is complex, we may also suggest alternative approaches to autism assessment. We also discuss whether a formal diagnostic report is necessary, or whether your goal is more focused on insight, understanding, and support strategies.

Overall, our aim is to make assessment more accessible, reduce unnecessary costs, and ensure the process is tailored to what you actually need.

  • We support clients who are self-managed or plan-managed under the NDIS. We are unable to accept NDIA (agency-managed) funding.

Eligibility can also depend on the clinician and the type of support you’re seeking. We’ll let you know which of our clinicians are available for NDIS-funded sessions and help match you with the most appropriate option.

Please get in touch with us to discuss your goals so we can make sure our services are a good fit and align with your plan.

  • We do not currently offer couples therapy or group therapy programs, however we are looking to develop these in the future.

If you’re interested, please let us know and we can add you to our list so you can be informed when these services become available.

  • We understand that life can be unpredictable. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we require at least 2 full business days’ notice.

This means weekends and Victorian public holidays are not counted when calculating notice. For example, if your appointment is on a Thursday morning, you would need to cancel or reschedule by the end of the day on Monday to avoid a fee.

Appointments can be cancelled or rescheduled via our booking portal or by calling the clinic.

Missed appointments, as well as cancellations or reschedules made with less than 2 full business days’ notice, are subject to a fee equal to the full appointment cost.

  • The Liminal Clinic is not a crisis service. If you or someone else is at immediate risk, please contact emergency services (000) or reach out to Lifeline on 13 11 14.

  • Yes—your privacy is deeply respected. Everything you share in therapy is confidential and stays between you and your therapist.

However, there are some important limits to confidentiality. We may need to share information if there is an acute risk of harm to yourself or others, if we are required to do so under a legal requirement or court order, or if you give us explicit consent (for example, for progress reports to your GP or other treating professionals).

Where possible and appropriate, we will always discuss this with you first so you understand what is being shared and why.
