About our name
-
The word liminal comes from the Latin limen, meaning threshold. It describes the spaces “in between” — not the place you came from, and not yet the place you’re moving toward. These are the transitional spaces of uncertainty, change, and possibility.
-
In psychology, liminal refers to transitional states — times when old patterns or identities are loosening, but new ones aren’t yet fully formed. These moments can feel unsettling, but they are also powerful spaces for growth, healing, and transformation.
-
Anthropologist Arnold van Gennep (1909) first used the term to describe the liminal stage of rites of passage — when someone leaves behind an old identity but hasn’t yet taken on the new one. Victor Turner (1967) later expanded this to describe liminality as a time of ambiguity, openness, and possibility.
-
Therapy often means stepping into the unknown — standing on a threshold between what has been and what could be. These liminal spaces can feel uncertain, but they are also where healing and transformation take root. At Liminal Clinic, we walk with you through these thresholds, helping you make meaning, find safety, and move toward a life aligned with your values.
Our values
-
Unapologetically Human – We welcome the full spectrum of human experience: joy, grief, shame, hope, anger, mistakes, and growth. Therapy is not about perfection — it’s about realness, compassion, and connection.
Led by Lived Experience – Our clinicians bring both professional knowledge and lived experience. This combination helps us listen deeply, sit with complexity, and hold hope in a way that feels genuine.
Safe, Inclusive Passage – Therapy is a crossing — moving through uncertainty, transitions, or identity spaces. We prioritise emotional and cultural safety, so you don’t have to leave parts of yourself at the door.
Intersectional Empathy – We see and respect the whole of you. We recognise that gender, sexuality, neurodivergence, culture, race, ability, faith, and class intersect in ways that shape your story.
Integrity, Innovation & Growth – We commit to evidence-based, ethical practice, while also being forward-thinking and adaptive. We refine our skills, challenge outdated systems, and grow with our clients and community.
